I Spy - Making a Space Universal Design

Participants will engage in an activity to help identify barriers to individuals with disabilities within a set space. This is to demonstrate what might seem to be accessible to ALL may not be necessarily inclusive for individuals with a disability. What solutions could be suggested to provide the best access to all. After the activity, we will debrief and discuss the use of universal design that creates access. This activity is part of a larger training program that ASU offers called AccessZone, which is designed to increase institutional awareness and support, in working with students with disabilities.

Fulton Schools of Engineering is challenging children 5 to 14 years of age by exploring engineering concepts using LEGOs and LEGO robotics from the comfort of their home. Hear from Mr. Knorr, Camp Instructor and STEM middle school teacher about the virtual LEGO robotics camps that Fulton Virtual Summer Academy is offering and how STEM learning can be activated through play. These engaging camps were designed to capture children’s innate creative spirit and curiosity through unique LEGO building challenges which are tied directly into fundamental STEM concepts. Mission Phoenix Video Game

Join Desert WAVE (Women in Autonomous Vehicle Engineering) in their mission to provide greater autonomy to their robot submarine, Phoenix! This is an interactive game to help teach the public about the different stages of autonomy. This game is different from a traditional video game in that it becomes easier as you progress and upgrade Phoenix with new sensors and more sophisticated software. The idea is that the more intelligent these robots become, the less human interaction they require, and the more useful they become.

Participants will engage in a reading activity, which poses a learning challenge. This is to demonstrate what it might feel like to have a learning disability, to struggle with anxiety, ADHD, color blindness, etc... After the activity, we will debrief and discuss how disabilities create barriers that impact learning. Join Espe, a senior at Arizona State University and a Devil’s Advocate (that’s a student tour guide), for a tour of ASU’s Polytechnic campus. Espe virtually takes you to some of Polytechnic students’ favorite spots, like the Sun Devil Fitness Complex, the Technology Center and the iconic ASU water tower, while delivering fun facts along the way. For example, did you know the Polytechnic campus was formerly Williams Air Force Base? You can still see remnants of the base around campus, like the Polytechnic library, which is located in an old military bunker!
