Lets Catch the Bad Guys

In this demonstration, we will showcase our method of detecting pathogens and other scientifically interesting biomolecules. We will focus particularly on the rapid detection of the Ebola virus, one of the deadliest viruses in recent history. We will also discuss the possibility of extending this method to detect the COVID-19 virus as well as other biologically interesting molecules as long as a suitable system has been developed. It will give the audience a great insight into the diagnostic research and understanding through visualization.

Mission Phoenix Video Game

Join Desert WAVE (Women in Autonomous Vehicle Engineering) in their mission to provide greater autonomy to their robot submarine, Phoenix! This is an interactive game to help teach the public about the different stages of autonomy. This game is different from a traditional video game in that it becomes easier as you progress and upgrade Phoenix with new sensors and more sophisticated software. The idea is that the more intelligent these robots become, the less human interaction they require, and the more useful they become.

Visiting the ASU Solar Power Lab

Have you ever wondered how to make a solar cell in a research lab? The Solar Power Lab is located at Macro Technology Works at the ASU research Park. In a state-of-the-art clean room with semiconductor processing and metrology equipment, ASU has a complete fabrication line for silicon solar cells. The facility includes 6,000 square feet of cleanroom space equipped with a full set of tools supporting silicon solar cell fabrication from wafers to modules. This video shows how solar cells are made in the lab. We describe the process from the silicon wafer to the final solar cell.

What is a NanoFab?

NanoFab is the shortened name of a nanometer-scale fabrication facility. It is the cleanroom where devices with nanoscale features, like those found in computer chips, are built. Remember, 1 nanometer is one-billionth of a meter. So, the components being fabricated are extremely small. The video below will give a short tour of the ASU NanoFab, and talk about the device fabrication process using various pieces of advanced equipment and instruments. Mother Nature is Earth’s greatest design engineer, but she can also pack a destructive wallop. Researchers at the Center for Bio-mediated and Bio-inspired Geotechnics (CBBG) are learning from nature to discover ways to mitigate these destructive effects. Liquefaction, a phenomenon where saturated soil acts and flows like a liquid, is often the major source of property damage due to earthquakes. CBBG engineers are working to understand, and reproduce, ways in which nature cements and creates bubbles in soil to prevent soils from liquefying. Try a hands-on experiment at home to explore ways in which soil particles can be cemented together.
